Aadhaar 2.0: Biometric Updates, Online Changes & Game-Changing Security Moves

In September 2025, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced significant new rules and updates pertaining to Aadhaar card enrolment and updates, which every Aadhaar cardholder must be aware of and comply with at the earliest. These changes aim to streamline the update process, enhance security, and ensure accurate identity verification for over 1.3 billion residents of India. With deadlines approaching and new protocols rolling out, understanding these rules is critical to avoid inconvenience and ensure seamless access to services linked with Aadhaar.

 

Key Highlights of the New Aadhaar Rules

 

Free Aadhaar information updates are available only until September 14, 2025; charges will apply afterward.

 

From November 2025, Aadhaar details such as mobile number, name, address, and date of birth can be updated online from home without visiting an Aadhaar center—except for biometric updates which still require physical presence.

 

Mandatory biometric updates for children aged 5 to 15 years must be completed without delay, with schools and state authorities actively facilitating this.

 

Aadhaar data will increasingly be verified automatically through integration with other government databases such as PAN, passport, ration card, birth certificate, and electricity bills to minimize the need for document uploads.

 

Aadhaar holders will soon be able to use a new QR code-based mobile app to electronically share masked or full Aadhaar details, reducing the risks of identity fraud and document misuse.

 

Duplicate Aadhaar numbers will be canceled, retaining only the earliest issued Aadhaar with biometric data.

 

The last date to switch from National Pension System (NPS) to Universal Pension System (UPS) is September 30, 2025, which is also important for Aadhaar-linked financial services.

 

Mandatory Updates and Deadlines

UIDAI has mandated that all Aadhaar cardholders must ensure their information is accurate and up-to-date under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) First Amendment Regulations, 2025, effective since July 2, 2025. The biggest push is on biometric updates for children between 5 and 15 years old, as their biometric data changes significantly and must be re-registered periodically to avoid invalidation of their Aadhaar number. Schools across India have been urged by UIDAI and the Ministry of Education to assist in conducting biometric update camps using the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) platform to facilitate mass updates.

 

New Procedures for Enrolment and Updates

The new rules have expanded the list of acceptable identity and address documents for Aadhaar enrolment and updates. These documents now include valid Indian passports, PAN cards, ration cards, birth certificates, and several certificates issued by government officials on UIDAI formats. For children’s birth date updates (ages 0-18), a birth certificate from an authorized state authority is mandatory.

 

Technological Enhancements and Privacy Measures

From November 2025, many Aadhaar updates will be possible online, reducing the need for physical visits to enrollment centers. The only exception will be biometric updates like fingerprint and iris scans, which will require in-person authentication. UIDAI’s move to integrate databases and use electronic identity disclosure via QR codes in its upcoming app will enhance user control over identity sharing and reduce Aadhaar-related fraud. Apart from biometric and demographic updates, several financial and regulatory deadlines have been announced around the same time:

 

The Income Tax Return filing deadline for the assessment year 2025-26 is September 30, 2025.

 

Aadhaar-linked services such as SBI credit card reward points and fixed deposit norms are undergoing updates.

 

Changes to LPG cylinder pricing and silver purchase rules have also been notified, impacting households across the country.
