Across Time and Borders: India Remembers Its WWI Sentinels in Hong Kong

In a heartfelt ceremony on May 28, 2025, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, India’s Ambassador to China, honored the brave Indian soldiers who defended Hong Kong during World War I. This touching event took place at the Indian Soldiers’ War Memorial in Hong Kong, a monument built through public donations to remember the sacrifices made by Indian troops stationed in the British colony during the Great War.

 

During World War I, the defense of Hong Kong relied significantly on its garrison, which included two Indian infantry battalions among a total force of 4,000. These Indian soldiers were vital to the colony’s coastal defenses, operating batteries and safeguarding key installations, even though the area didn’t experience direct combat. Their presence provided much-needed stability and security during a time of worldwide turmoil, and many of these soldiers served with great honor far from their homeland.

 

Ambassador Rawat, accompanied by local dignitaries and members of the Indian community, laid wreaths and observed a moment of silence at the memorial, which stands as a powerful reminder of the lasting legacy of Indian soldiers in Hong Kong. The ceremony highlighted the deep historical connections between India and Hong Kong and acknowledged the significant contributions of Indian troops to the Allied war effort.

 

This tribute is part of ongoing initiatives to recognize the Indian Army’s role in global conflicts, where over a million Indian soldiers served abroad during World War I, with many making the ultimate sacrifice.
