Age Is Just a Number: Simranjit Kaur’s Bold Stand Against Boxing Federation Policies

Simranjit Kaur, 29-year-old Tokyo Olympian and among India's best lightweight boxers, shared her own experience regarding age-based sidelining in Indian boxing. While acknowledging her return in the Women's Nationals, the 2018 World Championships bronze medallist criticized the selection policy of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), which tends to favor younger players over veterans. She pointed out that throughout the world, most of the very successful boxers older than 28 are still doing great, wondering why India throws experienced players into the dumping ground.

Simranjit disclosed she was on the verge of leaving boxing because of fewer opportunities and fewer competitions but has come back stronger after an 8-month hiatus. Training under coach Surinder Kaur in Mohali, she wants to concentrate only on her performance and hopes for more merit-based selection trials. Committed to participate in the Los Angeles Olympics, Simranjit's story is one of grit and a demand for systemic reform in Indian sports.
