AI meets Ayushman Bharat: Faster claims, fewer delays, and smarter health insurance

The Union government is leveraging artificial intelligence to fast‑track and automate claims adjudication under Ayushman Bharat‑Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (AB‑PMJAY), aiming to reduce delays, cut manual errors, and increase trust among hospitals and beneficiaries. Through a dedicated AI‑driven hackathon and new auto‑adjudication tools, the National Health Authority (NHA) is modernising the public health insurance ecosystem for better cash‑flow predictability and real‑time validations.

The National Health Authority has announced that it will bank on AI‑based solutions to streamline and accelerate claim processing for AB‑PMJAY, the world’s largest publicly funded health insurance scheme. The move is part of a broader digital‑health push that seeks to make hospital reimbursements faster, more accurate, and fully traceable for both providers and patients.

By integrating AI and machine learning, the system can cross‑check treatment codes, package rates, and eligibility criteria in real time, narrowing the window between discharge and claim settlement. This is expected to ease working‑capital stress for empanelled hospitals, especially in tier‑2 and tier‑3 cities, while also improving the experience of beneficiaries who rely on timely coverage.

Hospitals will gain access to clearer dashboards showing claim status, pending validations, and reasons for rejections or queries, fostering a more predictable and accountable relationship with the scheme. For patients, this translates into fewer disputes over covered procedures and a smoother journey from admission to discharge–claim closure.
