Air India Trims International Routes As Jet Fuel Prices And War Pressures Mount

Air India’s outgoing CEO Campbell Wilson confirmed that the airline has “no choice” but to trim schedules as many international flights have become unprofitable. The decision comes amid record-high fuel costs and rerouted journeys around the Strait of Hormuz, adding significant distance and expense.

Why Flights Are Being Cut

Global jet fuel prices have surged nearly 80% to $179.46 per barrel, making operations unsustainable. Airspace closures due to the Iran–West Asia conflict have forced longer detours, increasing fuel burn and operating costs. Air India reported losses exceeding ₹22,000 crore in FY2026, prompting urgent cost-cutting measures. 

Routes Affected

Passengers traveling from Delhi and Mumbai to London, Paris, New York, Toronto, San Francisco, Sydney, Melbourne, and Singapore will face reduced flight frequencies. Even high-demand corridors are impacted, with cancellations and rescheduling expected through June and July. 

Passenger Impact

Air India has raised fares and imposed surcharges to offset costs, but demand remains price-sensitive. The airline is working to re-accommodate affected travelers, though longer travel times and fewer options are expected until conditions stabilize.
