Delhi Metro Phase 5A Begins, India Gate To Get Direct Underground Connectivity

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has begun work on Phase 5A, a landmark expansion that will connect iconic sites like India Gate, Kartavya Path, and Raisina Hill to the metro network. This development is expected to transform accessibility for tourists, office-goers, and residents in the capital’s most sensitive precincts.

Project Details

Phase 5A will cover 16 km across three corridors, including:

RK Ashram to Indraprastha via Central Vista (9.9 km, underground)

Aerocity to IGI Terminal 1 (2.3 km, underground)

Sarita Vihar Depot to Kalindi Kunj (3.9 km, elevated)

The Central Vista corridor will feature twin tunnels and two underground stations at Central Secretariat and Kartavya Bhawan, passing beneath India Gate, the Supreme Court, and ministerial offices. Construction is expected to take 33 months. 

Strategic Importance

This expansion will provide direct underground access to India Gate and Kartavya Path, reducing surface traffic and improving connectivity for nearly 60,000 daily commuters in the area. The Central Secretariat station will become a triple interchange hub, linking the Yellow, Violet, and Magenta lines. 

Economic And Social Impact

By integrating heritage sites and government offices into the metro network, Phase 5A will enhance tourism, reduce congestion, and support sustainable urban mobility. The project also reflects Delhi’s push toward modern infrastructure aligned with the Central Vista redevelopment.
