Airtel and Jio's Fixed Wireless Broadband Expansion Challenges Smaller ISPs

India's local internet service providers (ISPs) are facing mounting challenges as telecom giants Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio aggressively expand their fixed wireless broadband services. The introduction of cost-effective Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology by these major players has intensified competition, leading to shrinking revenues and margins for smaller ISPs.

Out of 2,000 ISP licensees, only 1,300 remain active, with many struggling to sustain operations beyond six months due to financial constraints. The aggressive pricing strategies and bundling of over-the-top (OTT) services by Airtel and Jio have further squeezed the margins of smaller ISPs, making it difficult for them to compete.

Industry experts predict a wave of consolidation in the broadband sector, with larger ISPs dominating the market. Despite the challenges, some smaller ISPs are exploring innovative strategies, such as transforming cable TV households into fiber broadband users and enhancing service quality to retain customers.
