Airtel Seeks AGR Reassessment After Vodafone Idea Supreme Court Relief

Telecom Sector Eyes Policy Recalibration On AGR Dues  
Bharti Airtel Ltd has announced its intention to raise the issue of AGR dues with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), following the Supreme Court’s decision allowing the government to reassess Vodafone Idea’s liabilities up to FY17. Airtel’s management welcomed the apex court’s clarification and indicated that it would seek similar treatment for its own dues.

During its Q2 earnings call, Airtel’s MD Gopal Vittal reiterated that the 2019 AGR judgment had severely impacted the sector and that even basic calculation errors were not entertained. While the current relief applies only to Vodafone Idea, Airtel aims to initiate discussions with the government to explore a comprehensive reconciliation of its dues, including interest and penalties.
