Alarm Bells Ring as Pune Reports 24 Cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome: What You Need to Know

There has been an alarming increase in the cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Pune. So far, 24 people have been reported till January 22, 2025. It is an autoimmune disease that happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system. The symptoms may include weakness, numbness, and paralysis. Health authorities have launched surveillance in the affected areas, especially Sinhagad Road, where most cases have emerged. The Pune Municipal Corporation has constituted a Rapid Response Team to probe for possible causes of the disease, including recent infections and environmental causes. Experts also stress that prompt diagnosis and treatment are critical, as recovery times can vary considerably among patients. Vigilance is still important because investigations into this alarming cluster of GBS cases continue.
