Apple Unlocks a Legal Fight: Standing Up for User Privacy

Tech behemoth Apple has filed a judicial challenge to the UK government's secret request for it to insert a "back door" in its secure cloud storage systems. Apple made the challenge to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, which will be the first challenge under the 2016 Investigatory Powers Act encryption-cracking measures. Apple acted after it suspended its Advanced Data Protection service in the UK instead of acceding to the government's request. The case, to be heard as soon as this month, has set alarms ringing over user privacy and security of data. The UK government is likely to contend that the case be marked on grounds of national security.
