ArcelorMittal Nippon Sues India Over Metallurgical Coke Import Dispute

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has taken legal action against the Indian government over the rejection of its older metallurgical coke import orders. The company argues that the government's decision to apply import restrictions retroactively is unjustified and contradicts India's free trade policies. The dispute centers on India's recent curbs on low-ash metallurgical coke imports, aimed at supporting domestic suppliers. However, ArcelorMittal Nippon claims that local suppliers cannot meet its quality requirements, necessitating imports from countries like Poland and Indonesia. The company warns that without these imports, it may have to significantly reduce production or even shut down its blast furnace operations by June 2025, impacting its expansion plans and causing financial harm.
