Archaeologists Plunge into Ancient Mysteries: ASI Resumes Underwater Exploration of 4,000-Year-Old Dwarka

 

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has initiated the first-ever underwater excavation of Dwarka, the mythic 4,000-year-old sunken city off the Gujarat coast, believed to be karmabhoomi of Lord Krishna. A group of five archaeologists headed by Professor Alok Tripathi, comprising a number of women researchers, initiated exploration close to Gomati Creek on February 20, 2025. This is the first large-scale excavation in 20 years, after 2005-2007 excavations. The expedition hopes to get new knowledge on the underwater cultural heritage of the ancient planned city, and possibly find structures and relics that will change our current perception of this legendary site.
