Atomic Ambitions: India Aims High with 18 New Reactors

India plans to greatly boost its nuclear energy output by having 18 additional reactors, each of which will produce 13,800 MW of electricity cumulatively in 2032. This master plan will further bring India's overall nuclear power capacity to 22,480 MW. There are presently 24 reactors having a combined capability of 8,180 MW that are running with the help of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). The addition features current projects such as four 1,000 MW reactors at Tamil Nadu's Kudankulam and a number of 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) at multiple locations. The decision is in line with India's vision to de-carbonize its power industry and improve energy security.
