August 2027: The Day India’s Rail History Changes Forever with Bullet Train Launch

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India’s first bullet train will begin operations on a 100 km segment between Surat and Vapi, Gujarat, in August 2027. This initial run marks a key milestone in the country’s ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor project, spanning 508 km with trains running at speeds up to 320 kmph.

The corridor, featuring four main stops on the fastest route, will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to just 1 hour 58 minutes. If trains halt at all 12 stations, the journey will take approximately 2 hours and 17 minutes. The full route is expected to be fully operational by December 2029.

Vaishnaw highlighted the complexity and innovative design solutions implemented to overcome project challenges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress during his visit to the Surat station. The technology basis is expected to mirror the reliable Japanese Shinkansen model, though details on the inaugural train’s origin remain unconfirmed.
