The Indian government has initiated a nationwide sensitisation campaign to educate people on how to avoid heat-related illnesses during extreme heatwaves. The campaign is based on age-old health practices backed by science, such as drinking water and resting indoors during the hottest time of the day. The Ministry of Ayush has released bilingual booklets with practical tips on how to prevent heatwaves, such as drinking plenty of water and using cooling methods like wet cloths. As heat levels continue to increase across India, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is drawing up a comprehensive heatwave mitigation strategy to enhance preparedness and response mechanisms. The program aims to reduce heat-related fatalities by guaranteeing awareness and community involvement, especially among vulnerable populations.
