Beneath the Foam: Yamuna's Pollution Problem Persists

A parliamentary committee has found 23 of the 33 sites along the Yamuna River failing to achieve major water quality criteria. The ability of the river to support life is almost nil in the stretch through Delhi due to low dissolved oxygen content. Even after improvement in sewage treatment plants, the pollution level remains high. Sites in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh alone achieved the standards. The committee urges collective action to check pollution and restore the health of the river. Encroachment on floodplains is another major issue.
