The 2026 West Bengal assembly elections marked a watershed moment in Indian politics. The BJP, once a marginal player in the state, secured a decisive majority, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) saw its seat tally collapse from 215 in 2021 to below 100.

The deployment of central security forces also reassured voters, curbing fears of post-poll violence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invocation of the “Anga-Banga-Kalinga” vision framed Bengal’s resurgence as part of a larger eastern India growth narrative. This civilizational and economic messaging resonated with voters, linking regional pride to national development. 

Electoral Roll Revision Factor

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls significantly altered voter dynamics in 94 constituencies, many of which had been TMC strongholds. The BJP capitalized on this by framing the exercise as a step toward electoral integrity, gaining traction in districts like Murshidabad and Malda.
