BHEL’s Green Commitment: 1,000 Saplings Planted on World Environment Day

Advancing Urban Forestry for a Sustainable Future  
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) marked World Environment Day with a significant step toward urban afforestation, planting 1,000 saplings at Jamburi Maidan, Piplani. The initiative, part of the company’s ongoing environmental sustainability efforts, utilized the Miyawaki method to accelerate forest growth and enhance biodiversity.  

Key Highlights of the Initiative  
1. The plantation drive was led by General Manager & Unit Head Shri Pradeep Kumar Upadhyay, alongside senior officials and environmental experts.  
2. The Miyawaki method, pioneered by Japanese botanist Prof. Akira Miyawaki, was employed to create dense, fast-growing forests in urban spaces.  
3. Over the past two years, BHEL has planted 20,625 saplings using this method, demonstrating remarkable growth results.  
4. The initiative is a collaborative effort between BHEL Bhopal and State Bank, with technical guidance from Dr. Pankaj Bharti.  

The Miyawaki Method and Its Impact  
- This technique involves planting native species in close proximity to simulate natural forests, promoting rapid growth and biodiversity restoration.  
- The method is particularly beneficial in urban environments, where green spaces are limited.  
- BHEL aims to plant 60,000 saplings in FY 2025–26, including 40,000 using the Miyawaki technique in partnership with the National Highways Authority of India.  

BHEL’s Long-Term Environmental Vision  
- A detailed roadmap outlines the plantation of 23,600 saplings in FY 2023–24 and 59,007 in FY 2024–25, including 625 through the Miyawaki method.  
- The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to combat climate change and improve air quality in urban areas.  
- Shri Upadhyay concluded the event by administering an environmental pledge, reaffirming BHEL’s commitment to a greener future.  

BHEL’s urban forestry initiative stands as a testament to its dedication to environmental sustainability, ensuring a healthier and more resilient ecosystem for future generations.
