Bhopal Set to Host India’s South-West Zone Karate Tournament for First Time Ahead of LA 2028 Olympics

In a significant move towards bolstering India’s presence in Olympic karate, the Karate Association of India (KAI) has announced Bhopal as the venue for the South-West Zone Karate Tournament starting January 15, 2026, marking the first time the city hosts this major event. The tournament will run for six days until January 20 and will feature around 1,200 karatekas from 10 states in the South-West Zone, including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Goa, and Maharashtra.

The competition will comprise several weight categories for men and women, designed to identify and nurture top regional talent for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Selected participants have qualified through multiple district, divisional, and state-level events. The event is expected to raise karate’s profile in Madhya Pradesh and act as a platform to spot potential Olympic contenders.

Pankaj Shukla, KAI’s National Vice-President and South-West Zone President, emphasized the tournament’s role in boosting karate’s grassroots outreach and preparing athletes for international competitions. Madhya Pradesh currently ranks as the second-strongest state in karate performance nationally, underscoring the region’s growing prominence in the sport.
