BluSmart on the Brink: India’s Largest Electric Fleet May Hit Reverse Gear

In a twist, BluSmart, South Asia's largest all-electric ride-hailing platform, is perhaps reviewing its ambitious plans for growth. Famous for its green fleet and focus on sustainable mobility, the Gurugram-headquartered firm has been fast expanding operations within India and globally. Nevertheless, recent indications have it that BluSmart may put an end to its cab-hailing operations or curtail business because of operational challenges and money problems.

BluSmart launched its highly-awaited service in Mumbai on January 1, 2025, providing high-end electric cab rides with such advantages as no cancellations and a CO2 tracker. In spite of such innovations, however, the firm's asset-intensive model—owning its vehicles and using salaried drivers—has been particularly costly. Although this model provides quality control, it does raise operational expenses in contrast to competitors that use driver-owned vehicles.

The firm has registered remarkable achievements, including a fleet of more than 8,500 EVs and lowering CO2 emissions by 49,000 metric tons. However, maintaining growth in the face of increasing competition and economic stress might have compelled BluSmart to reconsider its strategy. If the firm chooses to cut back or withdraw from the cab-hailing segment, it would be a significant change in India's EV mobility ecosystem.
