Starbucks is set to open its first corporate technology office in India in fiscal year 2027, which begins in October 2026. The new hub will focus on technology and engineering roles, bringing work currently done by third party vendors back in house as part of a broader plan to cut about 2 billion dollars in costs and improve global operations.
After a decade of expanding its café footprint in partnership with Tata, Starbucks is now doubling down on India in a different way. An internal memo cited by Bloomberg and Indian media reveals that the coffee giant will establish its first corporate office in the country, dedicated to technology. The move aligns Starbucks with a growing list of global consumer brands using India as a key tech and back end innovation base.
First India Corporate Office For Tech
Starbucks has told employees it plans to open a technology office in India in its 2027 fiscal year, making it the company’s first corporate office in the country beyond its Tata Starbucks retail joint venture.
The internal communication from Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan says the India hub will focus on technology operations and engineering related work, including roles that were previously handled by external service providers.
Bringing Outsourced Work Back In House
The India tech office is part of Starbucks’ announced goal to slice about 2 billion dollars in expenses by streamlining processes and reducing dependence on third party outsourcing.
By relocating some technology functions to India, Starbucks expects to benefit from lower costs, a large pool of engineering talent and tighter control over critical digital systems that support stores, loyalty programmes and mobile ordering.
Fiscal 2027 Launch, City To Be Finalised
The new centre is slated to start operations in Starbucks’ fiscal 2027, which begins in October 2026, once a suitable Indian city is chosen later this year.
Starbucks has not yet announced the location but media reports say recruitment for technology focused roles will begin after the site is finalised, with hiring expected across software engineering, data, infrastructure and IT operations.
Another Global Brand’s Bet On Indian Talent
The decision underscores India’s position as a global technology and services hub, adding Starbucks to a roster of multinational retailers and consumer brands that already run digital and analytics centres out of Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurugram and other cities.
For Indian tech professionals, the move could open up roles that blend consumer technology, retail operations and global product work rather than just traditional IT services, at a time when many companies are rethinking offshoring and in house capability mixes.
