Brotherhood in Uniform: Six Childhood Friends From Manipur Commissioned as Army Officers

In a rare and inspiring journey of friendship and ambition, six young men from Manipur, who first met in Class 6 at Sainik School Imphal, have now been commissioned as officers in the Indian Army. Their paths, intertwined since 2013, led them through rigorous training at the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA), culminating in their commissioning at the prestigious Khetrapal Auditorium in Dehradun.  

A Journey of Shared Dreams  

- The six officers—Lieutenants Thokchom Shiggarth, M Denish Singh, Naoton Maetei, Naoba, Meghnat Soibam, and Ronendro Angom—cleared the NDA entrance exam together in 2021.  

- Their friendship, forged through hostel life, morning drills, and academic challenges, remained unbroken as they navigated the demanding training at NDA and IMA.  

- Each of them is the first in their family to join the armed forces, coming from backgrounds where their fathers are farmers, grocers, and small business owners.  

The Emotional Moment of Commissioning  

- Inside the Khetrapal Auditorium, Lt Angom stood near the plaque commemorating the Battle of Basantar, reflecting on the journey that brought them to this moment.  

- The auditorium, named after Second Lt Arun Khetarpal, a Param Vir Chakra awardee, holds deep significance for every cadet passing through IMA.  

- As the six friends donned their uniforms, their bond transformed from childhood camaraderie into a lifelong brotherhood in service.  

Navigating Challenges and Looking Ahead  

- Manipur has faced significant unrest over the past two years, with ethnic tensions disrupting daily life. However, the newly commissioned officers remain focused on their careers and their commitment to serving the nation.  

- Lt M Denish Singh emphasized the importance of learning from both good and bad times, stating that their dedication to their profession is the best way to contribute to their state and society.  

- While they now part ways to join different regiments across the country, their shared journey remains a testament to perseverance, unity, and the power of friendship.
