Cash is King Again: UPI Outage Brings Transactions to a Standstill

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services experienced a widespread outage in India on Saturday, April 12, 2025, with thousands of users unable to make digital transactions. Popular payment apps such as Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay were impacted, disrupting individuals and businesses that depend on UPI for daily payments like shopping, bill payments, and money transfers. Complaints flooded websites such as DownDetector, with more than 1,200 reports by lunchtime. About 66% of the users had complained about payments, whereas 34% had faced problems with fund transfers.

 

The disruption started early in the morning and continued all day, affecting users across platforms and banks. Frustrated updates poured on social media as users complained of being unable to carry out transactions. Some reported being stuck at stores after eating things they couldn't pay for because of the breakdown. The disruptions affected businesses as well, showing how much the country relies on UPI for smooth transactions.

 

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which runs UPI transactions, has still not released an explanation for the outage. It is the sixth significant disruption of UPI services in a single year, raising questions about reliability. Users are waiting for confirmation on when the services will return.
