India's electronics sector is growing fast, driven by schemes such as "Make in India" and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Yet, this development is still linked to China, which is the largest source of key electronic components. In FY2024 alone, India imported more than $12 billion worth of components from China, pointing to a dependence that goes against India's self-reliance ambitions. In spite of geopolitical tensions, Chinese companies remain at the center of India's electronics manufacturing ecosystem. Industry analysts emphasize that going up the value chain involves working with China's high-tech providers. In the meantime, international players such as Apple and Samsung are using India as part of their "China Plus One" strategy, further increasing local production. The Indian government is meeting these challenges with a proposed ₹40,000 crore package to boost domestic component production. The aim is to cut import dependence and make India a global electronics hub. But the clock is ticking as countries like Vietnam and Indonesia fight for a share of the $4.3 trillion global electronics market. While India makes efforts to achieve economic growth along with strategic autonomy, its relationship with China is both a challenge and an opportunity for the electronics industry.
