China’s Singles Surge: Why More People Are Choosing to Stay Unmarried

China is experiencing a notable rise in its single population, which is expected to reach 400 million. This trend is influenced by various factors, such as evolving attitudes, economic challenges, and gender disparities.  In urban areas, many young individuals are choosing to stay single, believing that a fulfilling life can be achieved without marriage. Career goals and financial independence, especially among women, often lead to postponing or forgoing marriage altogether. Additionally, workplace discrimination and societal expectations regarding childcare impact women's choices.  In rural regions, a gender imbalance leaves many men facing the prospect of lifelong singleness. The high cost of living and fierce competition also deter younger generations from marrying.  Marriage registrations in China have seen a decline, with only 6.1 million couples registering in 2024, marking a 20.5% drop from the previous year.
