Clearing the Skies: DGCA Pushes for Transparent Airfare Data to Protect Passengers

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of India and major airlines are in disagreement over a requirement for detailed airfare data from the past two years. Airlines believe such information is commercially sensitive and have offered to provide a summary instead. The DGCA plans to use the data to conduct analysis of fare trends in the context of public concern over expensive fares around certain peak travel seasons. In the meantime, the Directorate of Civil Aviation has no intention of regulating airfares – the objective is to improve transparency with fare monitoring. The DGCA has requested that, rather than potential tariff regulation, fares be left to the demands of the marketplace.
