Coal India At The Crossroads Of Energy Security And Sustainability  
Addressing the 51st Foundation Day celebrations of Coal India Limited (CIL) on November 2, 2025, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy underscored the company’s pivotal role in shaping India’s energy future. He praised Coal India as the backbone of the nation’s power system for over five decades, but stressed that the next phase of its journey must align with India’s climate commitments and clean energy goals.  

Reddy noted that while coal continues to dominate India’s energy basket, accounting for nearly 70 percent of power generation, the government is simultaneously pushing for rapid renewable expansion. He emphasized that Coal India, as the world’s largest coal producer, must diversify into solar, wind, coal gasification, and critical mineral exploration to ensure a balanced and sustainable energy mix.
