Corn Quest: Uttar Pradesh Aims to Pop Production to New Heights

The government in Uttar Pradesh has introduced a daring initiative to increase maize production twice over by the year 2027, as the output of 14.67 lakh metric tonnes now increases to 27.30 lakh metric tonnes. This effort intends to grow area under maize farming and per-hectare production by using the latest agricultural techniques and spreading awareness.

The government is promoting farmers to use high-yielding varieties of maize and providing training, financial assistance, and incentives, particularly for popcorn, baby corn, and sweet corn production.

The Quick Maize Development Scheme, funded by more than Rs 27 crore, is accelerating innovation and efficiency in maize cultivation.

Maize's rich variety of uses-in food, animal feed, ethanol, pharmaceuticals, and more-make it a strategic crop for the economy of the state.

The crop falls under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system, guaranteeing farmers a steady income. 

The state plans to expand the area under maize by 200,000 hectares and invest in food processing plants in order to further boost the industry. 

Maize is prized for its rich nutrient content and is referred to as the "queen of cereals."

Authorities point out that government support sustained so far has already doubled production of pulses and oilseeds over the past few years, and the same outcome can be anticipated for maize as more farmers opt for this remunerative and versatile crop.
