A recent report by Avendus Capital highlights that the sector’s gross loan portfolio (GLP) is projected to grow at over 15% CAGR over the next 5-6 years, breaching the Rs 10 trillion mark by around 2030. This marks a significant structural upcycle after years of cyclical disruptions.

Key Highlights: Growth Drivers and Market Dynamics

The microfinance market size in India reached approximately USD 6.7 billion (around Rs 53,000 crore) in 2024 and is expected to nearly double by 2033, hitting USD 15.8 billion, with 10% CAGR during 2025-2033, as per IMARC Group data.

The sector’s expansion stems from government-backed financial inclusion initiatives like PMJDY and MUDRA, increased lending to women entrepreneurs, and augmentation of credit access in underpenetrated rural and semi-urban markets.

Digital transformation plays a crucial role through mobile banking, AI-driven credit assessments, and fintech partnerships that lower operational costs, streamline loan disbursals, and enhance borrower convenience.

Despite short-term stress and elevated defaults in FY25, many MFIs adopted conservative rhythms, writing off significant expected credit losses to strengthen balance sheets and ensure stability.

Regulatory support from the RBI and industry self-regulation frameworks are fostering transparency, reducing risks, and improving sector sustainability.

Four secular themes are expected to propel future growth: deeper rural penetration, tapping diverse geographies, rising engagement with new-to-credit customers, and accelerated digital adoption.

Profitability is expected to improve, with MFIs projected to return to historical return on equity (RoE) levels of around 20% over the next half-decade, cementing a resilient and scalable business model.
