Data Dhamaka: Sitharaman's Digital India Makeover

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced proposals to utilize Digital India databases for improved data collection and processing. Delivering a speech at the 49th Civil Accounts Day celebrations, she noted the role that the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) could play in this initiative, considering the enormous datasets handled by the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). The initiative seeks to enhance fiscal transparency and governance. Sitharaman also highlighted simplifying year-end accounts for easier citizen access. The PFMS has already accounted for appreciable savings in reforms in fund disbursement and treasury management. The government is working on PFMS 2.0 to improve further the efficiency of financial tracking and fund management in central and state schemes.
