Delhi’s Vasant Kunj Tunnel Set for 2026 Kickoff—A Game-Changer for Traffic Flow

Project Overview & Strategic Importance

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is gearing up to begin construction on a 5-km underground tunnel connecting Shiv Murti–Mahipalpur (Dwarka Expressway) to Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj.

Estimated at ₹3,500 crore, the tunnel aims to decongest South Delhi’s traffic, providing a signal-free corridor between Dwarka, Gurugram, and key arterial roads.

The project is part of a larger ₹24,000-crore infrastructure push, approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Traffic Relief & Connectivity Boost

The tunnel will ease congestion on NH-48, particularly near Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, Mahipalpur, and Rangpuri.

Designed with two underground tubes, each with three lanes, the tunnel will support six-lane traffic movement, reducing bottlenecks.

Once completed, it will connect Central and East Delhi to major highways, including Delhi-Katra Expressway (NE-5), NH-44, NH-10, NH-48 (Delhi-Jaipur Highway), and NH-709B (Delhi-Dehradun Expressway).

Environmental & Safety Considerations

The tunnel will feature electro-mechanical systems, ventilation, CCTV surveillance, emergency exits, and fire safety mechanisms.

Concerns over forest land impact have been addressed, with compensatory afforestation planned for 417 trees.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has reviewed environmental implications, ensuring compliance with sustainability norms.

Government’s Vision & Timeline

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the tunnel’s role in making Delhi congestion-free and fuel-efficient.

The Delhi Ridge Management Board and Supreme Court have cleared the project, with final approvals in place.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with completion targeted within three years.
