Discovery of 23 Blood-Sucking Fly Species in Andaman and Nicobar Islands Highlights Biodiversity

For the first time, a significant number of 23 species of blood-sucking flies has been recorded from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Such findings, indeed, open windows to understanding ecological diversity within such unique regions. The species found in this research belong to Phlebotomine sand flies, which are the vectors of some diseases such as Leishmaniasis. These results can be significant in public health concerns as such disease-causing insects may have hazardous health risks to both human beings and animals.

The research highlights the need to monitor these species in order to prevent the possible outbreaks. On the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which are otherwise celebrated for biodiversity, emerges a different story of ecological complexity with the availability of this new data. A layman's understanding of the behavior and habitats of these flies may help develop a proper control strategy against vector-borne diseases.
