Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated his call for collective support on the Women’s Reservation Act, emphasizing that the legislation is not just a political measure but a reflection of the aspirations of millions of women across India. The Union Cabinet has already cleared a draft amendment bill, which will be tabled in Parliament during the extended Budget Session.

Legislative Context

The Women’s Reservation Act, passed in 2023, mandates 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. The upcoming amendment bill proposes to implement this provision after a fresh delimitation exercise, increasing Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816, with 273 reserved for women. 

PM Modi’s Appeal

Addressing MPs across party lines, Modi stressed that empowering women in legislative institutions is essential for India’s progress. He highlighted women’s contributions in science, entrepreneurship, sports, and the armed forces, urging Parliament to unite in support of the bill. 

Political Support

The BJP has backed the amendments, aligning with Modi’s call for consensus. Analysts note that cross-party support will be crucial to ensure smooth passage of the bill during the special three-day sitting scheduled from April 16 to 18.
