Empowering Rural India: (Self-Help Groups) SHGs Set to Conquer Global Markets

The government of India has initiated schemes to encourage exports of goods produced by Self-Help Groups (SHGs). As of January 31, 2025, nearly 10.05 crore women households have been organized into 90.90 lakh SHGs in India. The recent Saras Aajeevika Mela 2025, organized from February 21 to March 10, promoted rural crafts and art, offering a platform for artisans and craftsmen to showcase their products. The National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) also is stepping forward to promote the exports of SHGs through strategic training and capacity-building exercises. These are envisioned to strengthen the rural artisans by providing them more market access as well as promote India's handicraft and other export potential.
