Ensuring Fairness: UP's Drive to Verify Pension Beneficiaries

The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a comprehensive re-verification drive for beneficiaries under the National Old Age Pension Scheme, aiming to ensure transparency and fairness in welfare distribution. This initiative will review the records of approximately 61 lakh pensioners currently receiving support through the scheme. The verification process is set to be completed by May 25, 2025.

 

The drive will identify and remove deceased or ineligible beneficiaries, making way for newly eligible senior citizens to access the scheme. Social Welfare Minister Aseem Arun emphasized the government's commitment to safeguarding the dignity and well-being of senior citizens. Eligible individuals aged 60 years or above with an annual income below specified thresholds will continue to receive benefits, with the pension amount transferred directly to their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer.

 

The verification process involves Block Development Officers in rural areas and Sub-Divisional Magistrates or Executive Officers in urban regions. To maintain accuracy, ten percent of verified cases will undergo cross-checking by senior officials. Strict action will be taken against any errors, ensuring that no living pensioner is wrongly marked as deceased.

 

This initiative is part of the Zero Poverty campaign, which seeks to include eligible elderly individuals from identified poor families in the pension scheme. Verified beneficiaries will receive their first pension installment starting in June, providing much-needed financial relief.
