From Air India to SEBI: Tuhin Kanta Pandey Takes the Reins in India's Financial Landscape

Odisha cadre 1987-batch IAS officer Tuhin Kanta Pandey has been appointed the 11th chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a three year term. Pandey, who is now Finance Secretary and Revenue Secretary, will replace Madhabi Puri Buch, whose term expires on March 1, 2025. Pandey is recognized for his contribution to the privatisation of Air India and preparing a new Income Tax Bill. With deep experience in financial management, Pandey was instrumental in preparing the 2025-26 Budget, which granted tax relief of ₹1 lakh crore to the middle class. Pandey's appointment is timely, as Indian markets have been under bearish trends due to large-scale foreign institutional investor withdrawals. His economic and public administration background has been viewed as a major strength in meeting present market challenges.
