From Code to Conscience: India Tops AI Ethics Charts, Says McKinsey

India has taken the lead as the global champion in responsible AI (RAI) maturity, according to a recent McKinsey survey that gathered insights from over 750 leaders across 38 different countries and various industries, including technology, healthcare, finance, and legal sectors. The report reveals that Indian organizations achieved a score of 2.5 out of 4 on McKinsey’s AI Trust Maturity Model—23% higher than the global average—showing a growing awareness of AI risks and a proactive stance on ethical implementation.

 

The survey assessed RAI readiness through four key areas: strategy, risk management, data and technology, and operational governance. While the global average score stood at 2.0, India’s top position is credited to significant investments in AI talent, effective risk monitoring, and the implementation of advanced data quality controls and incident response strategies. Industries such as technology, media, telecommunications, and financial services are leading the charge, with companies reporting advantages like improved operational efficiency, increased consumer trust, and a reduction in AI-related incidents.

 

Globally, most companies are planning to ramp up their RAI investments, with larger organizations setting aside over $1 million each year to enhance responsible practices. However, challenges persist: 51% of respondents pointed to insufficient training, while 40% highlighted regulatory uncertainty as obstacles to broader RAI adoption.

 

India’s proactive approach places it ahead of the United States (which scored 2.4), emphasizing its dedication to ethical AI and establishing a global benchmark for responsible, transparent, and trustworthy AI deployment.
