From Curry to Cosmos: Indian Astronaut to Spice Up ISS with Groundbreaking Bio-Experiments

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force is set to become the first Indian astronaut to carry out biological experiments on the International Space Station. Shukla is scheduled to fly in the next few months with at least three experiments planned that will help raise research projects in space technology, bio-manufacturing, and bio-astronautics. The experiments looking at growing edible microalgae for a sustainable food source, recycling astronaut urine to grow blue green algae, and looking at muscle loss in space are important to India's future space missions in the Gaganyaan program and also the proposed Bhartiya Antariksh Station. This milestone in space biotechnological research is exciting for the Indian scientific community, the Indian Government, and as India continues to grow in the space economy which is anticipated to reach $44 billion over the next decade.
