From Study to Standstill: Denmark Closes the Door on Student Job Permits

Since May 2, 2025, Denmark forbids foreign students studying on non-state-approved higher education courses from working permits, the government announced in a dramatic shift of immigration policy. The students will no longer be able to work during studies, remain on a six-month job hunt after finishing courses, or bring along accompanying relatives. The choice, which has been made by the Ministry of Immigration and Integration, is intended to ensure that residence permits are only given to students who have real academic intentions, following concerns about abuse of visas and its impact on the local job market. Students who already have residence permits or who were registered before May 2 are exempt from these new circumstances. The policy maintains the requirement to enroll in state-approved or accredited courses for learners who wish to work and have family rights in Denmark during their learning.
