Fuel Shift in the Fast Lane: Tata Motors Eyes CNG and Hybrid Power for Bigger Rides

Tata Motors is actively exploring the feasibility of introducing CNG and strong hybrid powertrains in its larger passenger vehicles, including SUVs like the Harrier, Safari, and the upcoming Sierra. Currently, the company’s CNG offerings are limited to sub-4-metre models such as the Tiago, Tigor, Punch, and Nexon.

This shift comes in anticipation of the Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE 3) norms set to take effect in 2027. According to Tata Motors MD Shailesh Chandra, hybrids offer a regulatory advantage as they are not bound by CAFE compliance, unlike EVs and CNG vehicles. With over 45% of Tata’s passenger vehicle sales already coming from alternative fuel models, the company is positioning itself to lead in the clean mobility transition.
