Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the state-of-the-art Dahod Locomotive Manufacturing Workshop in Gujarat, marking a milestone for Indian Railways and the government’s Make in India initiative. Built at a cost of ₹21,405 crore, the facility is set to transform Dahod into a major industrial and employment hub, with ripple effects across India’s rail infrastructure and local economy.
Mega Rail Investment:
The Dahod workshop, completed in a record three years since its foundation stone was laid in 2022, is designed to produce 120 high-powered electric locomotives annually, with potential scalability up to 150 units based on demand. Over the next decade, the plant aims to manufacture 1,200 engines, significantly reducing India’s reliance on imports and boosting self-sufficiency in rail technology.
First 9,000 HP Locomotive Debuts:
PM Modi also dedicated India’s first 9,000 horsepower electric locomotive to the nation—an engineering feat under the Make in India banner. These advanced engines can haul up to 4,600 tonnes of cargo, promising a leap in freight efficiency and safety. Features include air-conditioned driver cabins, onboard toilets, and enhanced safety systems.
Employment & Economic Impact:
The facility is expected to generate 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing new opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled workers in Dahod and surrounding districts. The project also opens up business avenues for small- and medium-sized engineering firms and power sector suppliers, further boosting the regional economy.
PPP Model and Export Ambitions:
Developed under a public-private partnership with an investment of ₹20,000 crore, the plant will manufacture locomotives for both domestic use and export, positioning India as a global player in rail manufacturing.
Gujarat’s Infrastructure Leap:
Alongside the workshop, PM Modi unveiled and laid foundation stones for multiple railway and development projects worth over ₹24,000 crore in Dahod, Bhuj, and Gandhinagar, including the doubling and electrification of key railway lines.
Outlook:
The Dahod Locomotive Manufacturing Workshop stands as a symbol of India’s rapid industrial progress, job creation, and commitment to sustainable, world-class infrastructure. With its first 9,000 HP locomotive rolling out, the plant is set to drive growth, innovation, and self-reliance in the Indian rail sector.
