GAIL (India) Limited has signed a 25-year concession agreement with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) to establish a cutting-edge Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plant in Bengaluru. The plant will process 300 tons/day of segregated waste to produce 12.6 tons of CBG and 22 tons of fermented organic manure daily, advancing sustainable waste management and renewable energy goals.
GAIL (India) Limited, the country’s premier natural gas company, marked a watershed moment in sustainable energy and waste management by signing a tripartite concession agreement with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) on October 16, 2025. The MoU was signed in the presence of Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, Shri D. K. Shivakumar, underscoring the strong governmental backing for this initiative.
Set to be located on an 18-acre land parcel provided by GBA on a permissive use basis in the KCDC area, Haralakunte Village, Bengaluru South Taluk, the new facility will process an impressive 300 tons of segregated municipal solid waste daily. This waste will be converted into 12.6 tons of compressed bio-gas (CBG) per day, a clean and renewable alternative fuel with about 90% methane content that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. Alongside, the plant will generate 22 tons per day of fermented organic manure (FOM), supporting organic agriculture and soil health in the region.
This initiative is part of GAIL’s broader green energy strategy, which includes plans to establish 26 CBG plants nationwide, either independently or through joint ventures, with total investments nearing ₹1,300 crore. GAIL’s pioneering efforts also include its first operational CBG plant launched in Ranchi in 2024, processing 150 tons of municipal waste daily to produce 5 tons of bio-CNG. The Bengaluru plant’s scale and output mark a significant expansion.
Notable Updates:
The concession agreement extends for 25 years from the commissioning date, reflecting a long-term commitment.
The plant’s waste processing capacity is initially 300 tons/day, with provisions to potentially scale up to 500 tons/day.
The project promotes circular economy principles by turning urban waste into valuable clean energy and organic fertilizers.
It aligns closely with India’s national objectives to enhance renewable energy capacity and sustainable urban waste management.
GAIL’s joint venture with TruAlt Bioenergy and VERBIO India accelerates bio-CNG projects via multiple greenfield plants.
Major Takeaways:
The plant fosters environmental benefits by reducing landfill burden and methane emissions.
Production of 22 tons/day organic manure supports sustainable farming practices.
The project enhances Bengaluru’s position as a leader in clean energy and innovative waste utilization.
Strong governmental support and land provision underscore policy alignment with India’s Net Zero and green energy goals.
GAIL’s expertise in natural gas and bioenergy integrates energy transition with circular economy solutions.
This landmark project embodies a compelling synergy between public authorities and state-run enterprises, setting a robust example of sustainability-driven industrial growth. The Bengaluru CBG plant is poised to be an impactful addition to India’s renewable energy landscape, with positive ramifications for urban waste management, energy security, and agriculture.
