Game Over for Gaming Rules? TN Faces Pro Players' Legal Challenge

A clutch of esports professionals and the Players Welfare Association moved court to challenge the new online gaming laws implemented by the government in Tamil Nadu. According to them, the tough laws involving a compulsion to get a KYC, Aadhaar verification, and an imposition of prohibition against online gaming from 12 midnight to 5 in the morning violated their fundamental right to carry on livelihood. They argue that such regulations, intended to safeguard children and ensure the prevention of addiction, disproportionately affect lawful professional gamers. The case represents the contrasting debate between consumer protection and business expansion in India's growing online gaming industry. The Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority remains to be answered on the challenge.
