Goa-ing, Going, Gone? Tourism Takes a Nosedive

Current reports indicate Goa's tourism sector is struggling, with a sharp reduction in overseas tourists. Though domestic tourism has not changed much, international travel decreased from 8.5 million in 2019 to a mere 1.5 million in 2023. Increasing expenses, competition from budget-friendly Southeast Asia, and issues at home such as the "taxi mafia" are turning tourists off. The officials, though, contest these assertions, with Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte announcing a 21% rise in total tourism in 2024. The state now aims to attract "responsible tourists" as well as concentrate on sports, spirituality, and digital infrastructure to redefine its image beyond the classic "Sun, Sand, and Sea" draw.
