The Indian government has re-emphasized its commitment to procuring 100% of the pigeonpea (tur) from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) in order to shore up prices and support growers amidst market fluctuations. Through the Price Support Scheme, the government procured 3.92 lakh tonnes of tur during 2025 till now, directly benefitting over 2.5 lakh farmers from nine states. This procurement is part of a larger scheme of achieving self-sufficiency in pulses, where the central agencies can buy up to 13.22 lakh tonnes during this season. MSP for pigeonpea has been set at ₹7,550 per quintal for 2024-25 and the government has pledged to maintain 100% procurement until 2028-29. This action is initiated when mandi prices decline below MSP, so that the farmers receive a fair return and sufficient buffer stocks are ensured to maintain market stability.
