The Indian government, according to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to achieve a Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of 50% in higher education by 2035. It is a challenging task that involves adding 34 million new seats in higher educational institutions. AICTE Chairman emphasized that an increase in GER from the current 28.3% will require infrastructure expansion, scholarships to 20% of students, and promoting digital education through MOOCs. Key changes are deregulation of private institutions and inducing industry alliances for increased employability. The government is also looking to develop five student cities and raising the level of faculty quality in order to increase a healthy, student-led environment.
