Honda Hits the Accelerator: Gujarat Plant to Become World’s Largest

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has declared the establishment of a huge expansion at its Vithalapur factory in Gujarat, making public plans to make an investment of ₹920 crore in a fourth assembling line. The move is intended to increase the plant's yearly output by 650,000 units, with the overall number going to 2.61 million units by 2027—making it Honda's biggest motorcycle assembling plant worldwide.

The growth will be in the high-demand 125cc motorcycle segment and is likely to create 1,800 new employment opportunities in the region. With this, cumulative manufacturing capacity of HMSI from its four Indian facilities will leapfrog from 6.14 million to nearly 7 million units a year by 2027. Vithalapur plant, which started operations in 2016, has witnessed fast-paced development with the capacity rising from an original 600,000 units to 1.96 million units after consecutive expansion stages.

This investment follows Honda's milestone of 70 million units manufactured in India since 2001. The business, with a current 25.37% market share in Indian two-wheelers, seeks to expand its presence and fight for market leadership. Honda's leadership underscored its strategy for India as an international manufacturing and innovation center aligned to growing domestic and export demand, including plans in electric two-wheelers.
