Huawei’s latest release, the MateBook Fold, is making headlines not just for its sleek design but for what’s inside: a 7nm chip made by SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.) using older-generation technology. Analysts say this is clear evidence that US sanctions are stalling China’s semiconductor progress, despite Beijing’s push for tech self-reliance.

The foldable laptop, launched in May 2025, runs on Huawei’s HarmonyOS and was expected to feature a more advanced 5nm-equivalent chip. Instead, it uses the same 7nm process as the 2023 Mate 60 Pro, indicating that SMIC has yet to scale up next-gen chip production. Meanwhile, global leader TSMC is preparing to mass-produce 2nm chips, highlighting the widening tech gap.
