Hydrogen on Track: India’s Railways Steams Ahead with Green Innovation

In a first-of-its-kind green transport initiative, India conducted a first-ever trial of a hydrogen-powered train coach at the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF) on July 25. The Driving Power Car of the 1,200-horsepower hydrogen train project makes India a member of the exclusive list of nations to have produced zero-emission railway technology.

Key findings of the test:

The trial has been a success, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated, describing it as a milestone in India's path towards green transport

The hydrogen coach is part of the larger Hydrogen for Heritage program, which seeks to run green trains on hill and heritage tracks

India will run 35 hydrogen-powered trains for approximately ₹80 crore per train, and an additional ₹70 crore per route for infrastructures

Strategic vision and pilot projects

A pilot project worth ₹111.83 crore is being undertaken to fit a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) with hydrogen fuel cells on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway

The project fits into India's net-zero carbon objectives and helps to decrease dependence on fossil fuels

Though initial operational cost is high, it should reduce with adoption scale

Global positioning and future outlook:

India is brought to the same level as global leaders in green rail technology, like Germany and Japan, by the hydrogen coach.

The initiative highlights India's larger hydrogen mobility initiative, including hydrogen-fueled buses demonstrated by Indian Oil in 2024

They forecast additional trials and commercialization by 2026, with the potential for export markets for domestic hydrogen rail technology
