Hyundai's Shocking Tumble: From 2nd to 4th in India's Fierce Car Retail Battle

In a dramatic market turn, Hyundai Motor India fell to number four in February 2025's passenger vehicle retail sales. Sales of the Korean carmaker took a 20% dive at 38,156 units from 47,540 units in February 2024. This surprise slide meant homegrown behemoths Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors swept past Hyundai to claim second and third positions respectively. Maruti Suzuki remained at the top with 1,18,149 units sold. The shake-up is a sign of heightened competition in the Indian car market, with native brands making traction through calculated product launches and the release of electric vehicles. Industry commentators are looking to see whether this is a short-term blip or an indication of a wider shift in consumer behavior.
